چکیده

Abstract Glaciers in the Russian High Arctic have undergone accelerated mass loss due to atmospheric and oceanic warming Barents–Kara Sea region. Most studies concentrated on western sector, despite evidence of accelerating as far east Severnaya Zemlya. However, long-term trends glacier change Zemlya are largely unknown this record may be complicated by surge-type glaciers. Here, we present a assessment (1965–2021) new inventory glaciers using declassified spy-satellite photography (KH-7/9 Hexagon) optical satellite imagery (ASTER, Sentinel-2A, Landsat-4/5 TM 8 OLI). Glacier area reduced from 17 053 km 2 1965 16 275 2021 (−5%; mean: −18%, max: −100%), with areal shrinkage most pronounced at land-terminating southern Zemlya, where there is recent (post-2010s) increase summer temperatures. We find that surging more widespread than previously thought, three classified confirmed surge-type, eight likely surged nine possible, comprising 11% Zemlya's 190 (37% area). Under continued warming, anticipate retreat increased likelihood basal thermal regimes shift.

Recent retreat of major outlet glaciers on Novaya Zemlya, Russian Arctic, influenced by fjord geometry and sea-ice conditions

Substantial ice loss has occurred in the Russian High Arctic during the past decade, predominantly on Novaya Zemlya, yet the region has been studied relatively little. Consequently, the factors forcing mass loss and the relative contribution of ice dynamics versus surface melt are poorly understood. Here we evaluate the influence of atmospheric/oceanic forcing and variations in fjord width on t...

Fusion of Multi-Source Satellite Data and DEMs to Create a New Glacier Inventory for Novaya Zemlya

Monitoring glacier changes in remote Arctic regions are strongly facilitated by satellite data. This is especially true for the Russian Arctic where recently increased optical and SAR satellite imagery (Landsat 8 OLI, Sentinel 1/2), and digital elevation models (TanDEM-X, ArcticDEM) are becoming available. These datasets offer new possibilities to create high-quality glacier inventories. Here, ...

Application of remote sensing data in measuring the area of the Zardkuh glaciers

Glaciers influenced by climatic factors and therefore as an important indicator in the study of climate change are studied. Although morphometric analyzes of glaciers based on the analysis of optical satellite data can provide an opportunity to measure ice outcrops, but the identification and determination of the buried glaciers underneath the glacial debris and, consequently, the determination...

Glacier surge mechanism: 1982-1983 surge of variegated glacier, alaska.

The hundredfold speedup in glacier motion in a surge of the kind the kind that took place in Variegated Glacier in 1982-1983 is caused by the buildup of high water pressure in the basal passageway system, which is made possible by a fundamental and pervasive change in the geometry and water-transport characteristics of this system. The behavior of the glacier in surge has many remarkable featur...
